In-person and Zoom demos/workshops
I love explaining my techniques and passion for watercolours to art societies and at art centres. I am now also well versed in hosting a demo/workshop via Zoom if preferred.

My cascading watercolour techniques tend to loosen up painting styles and broaden the way individuals approach watercolour and I am told that my approach is open and friendly and that I am generous with my information.

During each session I chat about my ideas around composition, about my materials – different pigments and surfaces – and about my own “gravity painting” method to manipulate paint. I touch on current art exhibitions, literature I have read and all sorts of subjects in between. Participants watch me paint, see step-by-step demos, ask questions and chat together. Please email me for details and scroll down to find out more.

some comments from art groups:
Thank you for travelling the distance you did to give us such a wonderfully entertaining evening. You have a very natural way in which you share your passion for painting, eye for detail, manipulation of your brushes, explanation of focal points, you invested yourself in the delivery and you were great.” Wareham Art Club June 2022

“You are an inspirational teacher and demonstrator and our members were very impressed. I will definitely be booking you for … a demo and workshop.” Maggie, Chichester Art Society July 2021

“Catherine’s watercolours are outstanding. She came to the Woodley and Earley Arts Group to run a painting workshop which was truly inspirational. She has also given our group a wonderful, 2 hour Zoom demonstration which was very entertaining. She is an excellent, generous tutor giving detailed instruction and information to artists of varying abilities. I would highly recommend her to anyone interested in watercolours.” Woodley Earley Art Group 2021

Fantastic teacher who makes it fun to learn and progress. She has the skill to allow everyone to work and improve at their own pace without feeling intimidated .” Caroline

Just to say thanks so much for the workshops, lots of happy people.:) ” Lucy, Director, Cornwall School of Arts

Thank you so much …for giving such a fabulous workshop on Saturday, everyone seemed to be thrilled with the day.” Tiz, Chapel Cottage Studio, Wales April 2021

“Just wanted to say thanks again for yet another wonderful day. We all thoroughly enjoyed it!” Kate, Shrivenham Art Society November 2019

“thank you for the wonderful day … All the participants came away feeling they had learnt some important techniques.  Also, we all feel more confident… Your relaxed approach and excellent teaching meant the day was particularly enjoyable. It is lovely to use watercolour in this way.” Sue, Frome Art Group
October 2017

“As you doubtless realise you were indeed well-received and greatly appreciated. Your approach was a revelation and gave us all the confidence to wrestle with the Bogeyman Watercolour unafraid now.” Combe Down Art Group, Bath

Thank you for giving us such a stimulating demonstration…It was fascinating to learn of new and effective ways with watercolour and many of us will be trying to achieve your loose yet controlled technique and the use of watercolour boards. We were in awe of the way in which you kept up an informative commentary while working, too.” Royal Tunbridge Wells Art Society

Workshop/demo themes: I can email a few ideas in advance to be chosen by the art centre or group when they meet up. A session can be based around one of my many landscapes in my website galleries, or a variety of watercolour portraits. Past subjects have included the canal at Bath, a woodland gateway, a city at dusk, abandoned farm etc
Workshop materials: I will email a materials list for participants to bring once the theme has been chosen. Participants are usually asked to bring along several source photos to help develop their own painting but I often bring along some of my own just in case!
Logistics: I am right handed and stand well to the left side of my painting (as viewed by the audience). My severely tilted easel helps give a clear view while I am working. I just need a large table top for my easel and a second on which to display my originals and prints that I bring along. I am used to using video and mics provided by the event organiser and have demonstrated and given talks to around 100 people in the past.
Depending on numbers, I should be able to incorporate an element of one-to one teaching into workshops. I usually work with between 10 and 16 participants (but this is up to you.) I have worked in a large variety of venues, including large festival marquees, Regency assembly rooms and galleries, at corporate away days and retreats and even in an active milking parlour!
Areas covered: SW/S England, S Wales. Midlands and SE England for full day workshops
