In-person and Zoom demos/workshops
I love explaining my techniques and passion for watercolours to art societies and at art centres. I am now also well versed in hosting a demo/workshop via Zoom if preferred.
My cascading watercolour techniques tend to loosen up painting styles and broaden the way individuals approach watercolour and I am told that my approach is open and friendly and that I am generous with my information.
During each session I chat about my ideas around composition, about my materials – different pigments and surfaces – and about my own “gravity painting” method to manipulate paint. I touch on current art exhibitions, literature I have read and all sorts of subjects in between. Participants watch me paint, see step-by-step demos, ask questions and chat together. Workshop/demo themes: I can email a few ideas in advance to be chosen by the art centre or group when they meet up. A session can be based around one of my many landscapes in my website galleries, or a variety of watercolour portraits. Past subjects have included the canal at Bath, a woodland gateway, a city at dusk, abandoned farm etc
Workshop materials: I will email a materials list for participants to bring once the theme has been chosen. Participants are usually asked to bring along several source photos to help develop their own painting but I often bring along some of my own just in case!
Logistics: I am right handed and stand well to the left side of my painting (as viewed by the audience). My severely tilted easel helps give a clear view while I am working. I just need a large table top for my easel and a second on which to display my originals and prints that I bring along. I am used to using video and mics provided by the event organiser and have demonstrated and given talks to around 100 people in the past.
Depending on numbers, I should be able to incorporate an element of one-to one teaching into workshops. I usually work with between 10 and 16 participants (but this is up to you.) I have worked in a large variety of venues, including large festival marquees, Regency assembly rooms and galleries, at corporate away days and retreats and even in an active milking parlour!
