NEXT ON AT CORNWALL SCHOOL OF ART, TRURO:
TUESDAY 23 APRIL 2024 – Capturing a sense of mystery in watercolour landscapes
A theme in her new book ‘Capturing light’ – Catherine will explore how to create a landscape with an atmosphere of mystery. The day will be based around the temporary features of shadows, mists and sunbeams and will be full of demonstrations designed to show the range of techniques she employs to suggest form that is partially hidden from view. Develop your own subtle landscape from your source photo with added mystery and memories. Please contact contact Cornwall School of Art direct to book.

WEDNESDAY 24 APRIL 2024 – Sunlight through trees in watercolour
Catherine will spend a day exploring themes from her new book ‘Capturing light’, using the beautiful watercolour subject of sunlight filtering through woodland. Watch her stepped demonstrations and learn to build expressive tree shapes from your source photo. Follow her ‘painting cycle’ from fluid, wet-in-wet mixing on the page to sharp detail and lifting-off paint until your own subtle landscape emerges from the page. The day will be full of demonstrations designed to show the full range of techniques Catherine employs in her work. We will end by reviewing our compositions and consider unifying layers and cropping, alongside other trouble shooting techniques.

FRIDAY-SUNDAY 28-30 JUNE 2024: Woodland Light in Watercolours
– This is a new venue for me set in a farm building in rolling countryside with lovely food too! This workshop will help you to light up your watercolours using the woodland around the retreat as your subject. At the heart of the session is my loose “gravity painting” watercolour technique, which enables freer painting styles and brighter colours. Learn to contrast loose washes with the deep tones of solid tube paint, sharp ink line and white paper, all to create a dramatic woodland landscapes with atmosphere.

10-16 MAY 2023 PAINTING HOLIDAY TO TURKEY
The May painting holiday was a great success and fully booked. Participants explored ancient ruined cities, boats on azure waters and narrow white washed towns in pen and watercolour. There were opportunities to swim from a boat during a trip to a sunken port and sit in amphitheatres soaking up the atmosphere. As well as accompanying the tours and giving painting instruction on location, Catherine ran painting sessions at a poolside villa and we even tried our hand at painting Turkish pots with a local craftsman. The hand picked accommodation included rooms with views over the harbour and hotel pool. Email Catherine here for enquiries for future trips.
